A drug with a long list of heavy side effects, commonly used to treat sufferers of schizophrenia, also possesses some startlingly potent anti-cancer properties, according to research published Thursday in the medical journal Cell.

The drug, thioridazine, is usually dispensed as a last resort for schizophrenics whose symptoms did not respond to other treatments. Scientists said that after analyzing thousands of different drugs for possible anti-cancer effects, they discovered that thioridazine can be used to selectively target and eradicate cancerous stem cells present in leukemia, along with breast, blood, brain, prostate, ovarian, lung and gastrointestinal cancers, all without the worst side effects of today?s most frequently used cancer therapies.

?The unusual aspect of our finding is the way this human-ready drug actually kills cancer stem cells ? by changing them into cells that are non-cancerous,? Mick Bhatia, the study?s principal researcher and scientific director of McMaster?s Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute in Canada, said in a media advisory.

Bhatia?s team didn?t find the drug all on their own, however. In order to siphon up large amounts of previously unknown data on already-available drugs, they actually created a robotic stem cell screening system that analyzed thousands of different chemical compounds for potential effects on leukemia and breast cancer.

?We discovered the drug by creating a new way of looking at different chemicals,? he explained to MedicalXpress.com. ?In order to do that, we have to put cancer stem cells in a dish, but also have normal stem cells to also test the compounds. We were able to do this with a robotic system, fully automated, that allowed us to go through 10 or 15 compounds [at first]. Now we can do this with thousands of compounds, eventually arriving at this drug that doesn?t do anything to normal stem cells, but kills cancer stem cells.?

The bad news: thioridazine is known to cause a wide variety of side effects in humans, including vomiting, constipation, swelling, slowed movements, the inability to produce facial expressions and sudden death from an irregular heartbeat ? meaning the drug won?t get prescribed to cancer patients just yet.

However, scientists said that further study of how the drug interacts with cancer cells could broach a new frontier in cancer therapies, and noted that there are at least 12 other existing drugs that have ?good potential for the same response.? They are still testing the drug?s effects on other types of cancers.

The McMaster advisory noted that Bhatia?s team hopes to begin human trials soon, and plans to test the drug first on leukemia patients whose cancer has returned after remission. They reportedly hope to learn whether thioridazine can also help prevent cancers from returning.

The Second Vatican Council?s declarations on non-Christian religions and religious freedom do not contain ?binding doctrinal content,? Cardinal Walter Brandmuller said at a press conference on May 21.

The retired president of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences, along with Archbishop Agostino Marchetto and Father Nicola Bux, is the coauthor of a newly published book, Le ?Chiavi? di Benedetto XVI per interpretare il Vaticano II [Benedict XVI?s ?Keys? for Interpreting Vatican II].

Stating that the conciliar documents have differing degrees of authority, Cardinal Brandmuller said that ?there is a huge difference between a great constitution and simple declarations.?

?Strangely enough, the two most controversial documents [on religious liberty and relations with non-Christian religions] do not have a binding doctrinal content, so one can dialogue about them," he continued. "So I don't understand why our friends in the Society of St. Pius X concentrate almost exclusively on these two texts. And I'm sorry that they do so, because these are the two that are most easy to accept if we consider their canonical nature.?

Cardinal Brandmuller added that all the conciliar documents ?must be taken seriously as expressions of the living Magisterium,? while Archbishop Marchetto said that Catholics must offer ?at least an adhesion of intellect and will? to all of the documents.

?From what I have learned, there must be an acceptance of the Council by those who want to be reunited with the Church," said Archbishop Marchetto, the retired secretary of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers. "I don't think the SSPX can say, 'Well, we'll set this or that document aside.'?

Cardinal Brandmuller said that the Society of St. Pius X, like the Old Catholics after the First Vatican Council, ?have in common a rejection of the legitimate developments of the doctrine and life of the Church,? but the Society is not ?insignificant? like the Old Catholics.

?We hope that the Holy Father's attempt to reunify the Church succeeds,? added the cardinal, who offered a solemn pontifical Mass in the extraordinary form at St Peter's Basilica last May.

The other weekend I spent with seriously some of the sweetest people I?ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. ?I originally met Kate through a mutual friend whose nursery she designed. ?After capturing her work for On to Baby and also getting to know her occasionally over the last year, Kate is my hands-down favorite interior designer in Chicago and the owner of Noble Design Group.

Needless to say I was beyond excited when Kate told me she?d be expecting a little girl of her own and I couldn?t wait to capture her own growing family and nursery

So the other week we got together for an early morning session to capture their life right before baby Piper?s arrival, and to spend a few hours with these two was just cloud nine for me. ?Their warmth was so infectious and they were even kind enough to invite me to stay for lunch afterwards. ?We walked around a local park, saw the duck pond and a pack of crazy squirrels (long story), and then walked back home to hang out for a bit more. ?Once we were finished shooting we enjoyed chips and salsa & enchiladas (which I must get the recipe for, they were so good!) and talked about technology overloading, helping the less fortunate, and their mission trips to China that they participate in often. ?It was the perfect session and I hope that these images reflect exactly what I?m talking about.

Anyway, thank you so much again Kate & Brandon for having me over and letting me capture your love, I can?t wait until baby Piper arrives soon! (only 3 more weeks!!) XO

We can't be certain as to how many units of the HTC EVO 4G LTE have made it out of customs thus far, but it appears the number is high enough for Sprint to officially set a date for shipping the device out to those who pre-ordered it online. A Sprint representative reached out to us to share the company's statement from this afternoon that customers should expect to receive their valuable treasure "on or around" May 24th. We're not in love with the "around" terminology, but this could simply be due to a high amount of demand. Of course, there are no details concerning when the phone will be in stock at your local store, but this is a clear indication that things are looking up for HTC in its current situation.
